Sourdough Kentucky Butter Cake
Sourdough Kentucky Butter Cake make from scratch is the perfect pound cake. The Butter Glaze seeps into the cake and it is gives it the extra special touch. Sweet, delicious, and oh so buttery cake! It’s a sure crowd pleaser!
This Sourdough Kentucky Butter Cake is one of my boys favorite treats. It just so happens that it is baked in a bundt pan and I made the mistake of calling it Bundt cake in front of my boys. From then on it’s been called Butt cake… because, of course, that’s what they heard. So, I humor them and lovingly offer them Butt cakes every so often and everyone gets a kick out of it. I love hearing, “Mommy makes the best butt cakes!” Everyone needs laughter in their life, right?!
Why Sourdough Kentucky Butter Cake?
I love incorporating sourdough into as much of my baking as possible. If you are feeding your sourdough starter every day (sometimes twice a day) like I do, you may have lots of sourdough discard. Don’t actually “discard” it! It is great in lots of quick recipes and adds such great flavor! And your sourdough discard works perfectly in this Sourdough Kentucky Butter Cake recipe!
Ingredients you will need:
- Butter
- Sugar
- Eggs
- Sourdough starter/discard
- Butter milk
- Vanilla
- Flour – I use all purpose.
- Baking powder
- Baking soda
- Salt
Tools you will need:
- Stand mixer or hand mixer
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Bundt cake pan
- Skewer (to poke holes in cake)
Perfect Recipe for Kids to Help
This Sourdough Kentucky Butter Cake is super easy to make. I just dump everything in a bowl and mix. It’s a great recipe for kids to make! They even get to poke holes all in it after it’s done baking! What child would not like doing that?
I love getting my boys to help in the kitchen or any household tasks for that matter. They will need these skills to be a help to their future wives. Get your kids involved and make it a fun bonding/teaching time. I know it can be hard when they are really young. Sometimes (maybe all the time) it makes it a lot more stressful and messy and just take so much longer to have little kids help out in the kitchen, but don’t pass up that opportunity to help them learn. They will remember and look back on these times fondly and be thankful for your example!
How to make Sourdough Kentucky Butter Cake
So, as I said, This is an easy recipe and quick to throw together. The only hard part is waiting for it to finish baking and then waiting for it to cool. I just made this today and I lost count of how many times each of my 5 boys asked how much longer until it was going to be done.
First, go ahead and Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Prepare the bundt pan with butter and flour. Be liberal with the butter. You don’t want the cake to stick to the pan when you turn it out after it has cooled.
Cream together all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Beat on medium high for 3 minutes. Bake 50-60 minutes, until toothpick comes out clean.
Making the Butter Glaze
When the Sourdough Kentucky Butter Cake is done, we can start the Butter Glaze. Put all the ingredients into a small sauce pan over medium low heat. Stir until butter is melted and sugar has dissolved. I take it off the heat just as it’s starting to boil. You don’t want to let it boil and then start to caramelize and possibly burn.
Before we pour the butter glaze on our cake, we need to make holes in the cake for the butter glaze to seep through. (This is a fun task for kids!) I like to use a wooden skewer. Poke holes all around the cake… the more the better.
Now you can pour the glaze over the cake while it’s still in the bundt pan.
Let cake cool completely before turning out onto a serving plate. I like to dust the top with powdered sugar to make it look pretty. Slice and enjoy!
I hope you enjoy this Sourdough Kentucky Butter Cake recipe and possibly making this with your children!
May we delight in our pursuit of homemaking! It is a noble calling!

Can I freeze this cake completely done and cold for another day?
Yes! I’d recommend eating it within 2 months, though. Enjoy!
This was a wonderful recipe, so buttery! I changed the glaze by subbing the vanilla and water with lime juice. Yummy! Next time more lime.
So glad you liked it! The lime glaze sounds amazing! Great idea!
My 11 year old aspiring baker, chose this recipe as something she thought she could do all on her own. The directions were clear and simple and the end result didn’t even last an hour. My family of 6, quickly devoured it.
