Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Sourdough Scones
Who doesn’t like peanut butter and chocolate? These Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Sourdough Scones are perfect with a big glass of milk or a cup of tea!
What is a scone?
Well, there are British scones and American scones. British scones are typically more plain and and light, kind of between a biscuit and cake. They are topped with Clotted Cream and lemon curd or jam. American scones usually are more sweet and buttery, more dense like a biscuit. They are loaded with a great variety of flavors and can stand on their own without toppings. These Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Sourdough Scones are definitely American scones. I have had funny reactions to these scones from my English relatives. They are very different from their scones.
Are these the best Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Sourdough Scones ever?
My kids sure think they are! I have been making this recipe, in variations, for probably about 25 years. When I first made these scones for my boys when they were little, they were a little leery. I guess the triangle shape threw them for a loop. They were just a little picky when they were little! They didn’t like trying new things. But they were all for these scones after I called them “Breakfast Cookies!” These scones are great at any time of day, not just breakfast!
Why Sourdough Scones?
I love incorporating sourdough into as much of my baking as possible. That’s why I modified my Peanut Butter Chocolate Scones recipe to include sourdough, and they are just as good… dare I say better! If you are feeding your sourdough starter every day (sometimes twice a day) like I do, you may have lots of sourdough discard. Don’t actually “discard” it! It is great in lots of quick recipes and adds such great flavor!
Ingredients you will need:
- Flour: I use All-Purpose unbleached flour.
- Sugar
- Baking Powder
- Salt
- Butter
- Peanut Butter: Creamy works best.
- Chocolate chips: I usually use white chocolate chips and semi sweet. We are a bit extra sometimes.
- Sourdough discard
- Milk: I use whole milk.
- Vanilla
Tools you will need:
- Mixing bowl
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Wooden spoon or spatula
- Pastry cutter
Ok, Now for the tools you will need to make this recipe. The only thing maybe a bit different, if you are just getting into baking, is a pastry cutter. We use a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the flour. You could use a cheese grater, but you will need to use frozen butter and work quickly as the butter will soften and not grate as well. I prefer to use a pastry cutter. It’s easy to just cut up the butter and peanut butter by pushing the pastry cutter into the mixture until you have pea size pieces of butter in your mix. Here’s a link to a pastry cutter… Other than that, you just need a good mixing bowl, measuring cups and spoons, a cookie sheet, and a wooden spoon or spatula to mix things together.
How to make Peanut Butter Chocolate Sourdough Scones
So to make these delicious scones you will add the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt to a mixing bowl. Stir to combine.
Next, cut in the butter and peanut butter with a pastry cutter (or grate the butter with a grater.) Once the butter and peanut butter are cut in, stir in the chocolate chips.
Combine the milk, sourdough discard, and vanilla with the flour mixture. Stir until dough is too thick to mix with a spoon. Then dump the contents of the bowl out on a floured surface and fold in the gently until all ingredients are combined.
Once it is all combined we divide the dough in half and form two circles about ½ in thick. Cut the circles into 8 slices.
Bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes. All ovens are different and just keep an eye on them and figure out what time works best with your oven.
Let cool and enjoy!! I hope you love these as much as my family does!
May we cherish our pursuit of homemaking! It is a noble calling!
